Regula is a game where the rule of how to win the game is determined during the game. Regula is Latin and means rule or law.
Rules
Board
Play on a hexagonal board with six hexes per side (see image).
Pieces
One player has white stones. The other has black stones.
Play
Players alternate taking turns. White starts with placing a stone.
Each turn after the White’s first move a player does one of the following:
- Place a stone.
- Propose a winning condition.
Proposal:
The player proposes a winning condition has not been proposed so far. The other player may accept it or reject it. If the other player accepts it the move ends and the winning condition is effective. If the other player rejects it then the moving player may place a number of stones up to the number of his rejected proposals (including the last one).
Winning Conditions:
The following are the winning conditions that can be proposed:
- the most stones on the board.
- the most groups
- the largest group
- the most rejected proposals.
- the most pairs of connected opposite sides
- the most pairs of connected adjacent sides
You can put each possible winning condition on a card for easier play. When a winning condition is rejected the player takes the card and adds it face down to his collection.
End
The game ends when the board is full.
Win
The player to fulfill the last accepted winning condition wins. If there is a tie then use the previously accepted winning condition instead. If that too is a tie then use the one before that, and so on. If the players are tied on all accepted winning conditions or there are no accepted winning conditions then the player who last placed a stone wins.
